Stay away from the grease as it will clog the hair follicles - you can use a sheen spray or activator though. I tell guys to use a leave-in conditioner.

leave in conditioner, and go get your hair trimmed every one or two weeks. Sounds funny, but my hair grew just doing that. Keep your scalp lightly oiled.
