i have just-past-shoulder-length hair, and i want to put some little curls all over my head for a formal school dance. none of my friends have one for me to use that's the right size, and my mom isn't willing to buy one. french braids won't work either because they make my hair poofy and frizzy. any ideas? and how much does a curler like that cost? (i've heard it called a banana curler, but i don't know its proper name)

I would use foam rollers, they have different sizes. Roll your SLIGHTLY damp hair the night before. Don't roll it too tightly because you'll end up looking like shirly temple. Do a test run, but I roll my hair a few times a week!

I use my flat iron to curl my hair and it gives me medium sized curls, I have a thin sized flat iron.

Just put a piece of hair in the flat iron at the root, then twist the flat iron around so the hair is folded over and pull down and you will get good curls.
